The next major confrontation between the United States and China may not begin with warships crossing the Taiwan Strait or fighter jets entering contested airspace.
It could begin hundreds of kilometers above Earth.
The United States and China are rapidly developing increasingly sophisticated space capabilities as both countries prepare for the possibility that a future conflict could extend into orbit. Why satellites have become so important in modern warfare
Modern militaries depend heavily on satellites.
They provide communications, navigation, intelligence, surveillance, missile-warning information and other services that allow forces on Earth to operate over enormous distances.
The U.S. Space Force now describes China as the "pacing challenge" in space and says Beijing is rapidly improving capabilities to track and target U.S. military forces. The service also says China and Russia are pursuing capabilities designed to disrupt or degrade American space systems.
That dependence creates a vulnerability.
If a military loses access to critical satellite services, its forces could potentially lose communications, navigation or important intelligence capabilities.
The result is a fundamental change in military strategy:
A country may no longer need to destroy an enemy's forces on Earth to weaken its military power. Disrupting the systems that connect, guide and observe those forces could also have major consequences.
The US-China space race is changing
For decades, the competition between Washington and Beijing was largely described as a race for rockets, astronauts, lunar missions and scientific achievements.
The strategic picture is now much broader.
China has built a rapidly expanding space infrastructure, while the United States maintains an extensive network of military, intelligence and commercial satellites.
Recent Chinese space activities have attracted particular attention because some spacecraft are demonstrating increasingly sophisticated orbital maneuvers.
A Reuters investigation published September 2 reported that a secretive Chinese unmanned spaceplane released a small satellite in orbit during a June mission. According to commercial space-tracking company LeoLabs, the satellite subsequently maneuvered around another Chinese spacecraft before returning toward the spaceplane.
Such activity does not automatically mean that a weapon was deployed.
Spacecraft capable of approaching, inspecting, servicing or maneuvering around another satellite can have legitimate civilian and scientific applications.
But the same underlying technologies could potentially have military uses.
That is what makes the emerging competition so significant.
What are "hunter satellites"?
One of the most important concepts in modern space warfare is the hunter satellite.
The term generally refers to a spacecraft capable of maneuvering toward another spacecraft and operating in close proximity to it.
In a peaceful context, similar technology could potentially be used to inspect, repair, refuel or remove debris.
In a military context, however, a spacecraft capable of approaching another satellite could potentially interfere with it, observe it closely or—depending on its design—disable or capture it.
Reuters reported that Chinese researchers linked to military institutions are investigating technologies involving spacecraft capable of pursuing and potentially capturing other satellites, including technologies associated with autonomous maneuvering and refueling.
This is one reason analysts are paying increasing attention to rendezvous and proximity operations, or RPO.
The Center for Strategic and International Studies has also highlighted increasingly sophisticated Chinese satellite operations in geosynchronous orbit as part of the growing counterspace threat environment.
The battlefield may not involve explosions
When people hear "space warfare," they often imagine missiles destroying satellites.
That is only one possibility.
A future conflict could involve non-kinetic attacks that interfere with satellites without physically destroying them.
Potential methods include:
- Electronic jamming
- Signal spoofing
- Cyber operations
- Laser dazzling
- Communications interference
- Close-proximity spacecraft operations
The advantage of some of these methods is that they could potentially interfere with an adversary's capabilities without producing the enormous debris cloud associated with physically destroying a satellite.
The U.S. Space Force and other analysts have identified electronic warfare, cyber capabilities, lasers and anti-satellite weapons as elements of the modern counterspace environment.
That means a future "space attack" might not look anything like a traditional battle.
There might be no explosion visible from Earth.
A satellite could simply stop communicating properly, lose its ability to navigate, become temporarily blinded by interference or behave unexpectedly.
China already has a demonstrated anti-satellite capability
This competition is not entirely theoretical.
China demonstrated a direct-ascent anti-satellite capability in January 2007 when it destroyed the Fengyun-1C weather satellite.
The test generated a large amount of orbital debris and became a major milestone in discussions about the dangers of anti-satellite warfare.
The lesson was clear:
Destroying one satellite can create a threat to many others.
That is because debris does not remain neatly around the original target. Fragments can travel through orbital paths and potentially threaten unrelated spacecraft.

Why the United States is concerned
Washington increasingly treats space resilience as a national-security priority.
The U.S. Space Force says China and Russia are developing capabilities intended to disrupt and degrade U.S. space systems.
The concern is not simply about satellites themselves.
It is about everything those satellites enable.

The significance is not that every one of these systems is a weapon.
It is that China increasingly possesses the technological foundation for more active operations in orbit.
And that changes the strategic calculation.
Satellites that were once expected to remain relatively predictable objects in space can increasingly maneuver, approach other spacecraft and potentially perform complex operations.
Could a US-China conflict spread into space?
Yes—but that remains a scenario, not a prediction.
If the United States and China entered a major military conflict, both sides would have strong incentives to protect their own space-based systems while attempting to limit the opponent's ability to use satellites for military purposes.
That could make space an important part of the conflict.
But it would not necessarily mean astronauts fighting each other with futuristic weapons.
The more realistic danger could be a combination of electronic warfare, cyber operations, satellite interference and attempts to disrupt the space infrastructure supporting military forces on Earth.
And that creates another problem:
Escalation.
An action intended to temporarily disable one satellite could be interpreted as preparation for a much larger attack.
A maneuvering spacecraft could be viewed as threatening even if its operators claim it has a peaceful purpose.
And the destruction of a satellite could generate debris that threatens spacecraft belonging to countries that are not even involved in the conflict.
Why "dual-use" technology makes space warfare difficult to understand
One of the biggest challenges for governments is that many space technologies have both civilian and military applications.
A spacecraft capable of maneuvering close to another satellite might be:
- inspecting it;
- repairing it;
- refueling it;
- removing debris;
- collecting intelligence; or
- potentially interfering with it.
The technology itself does not always reveal the operator's intention.
